Stalking a Wild Bird

Joining in on Wild Bird Wednesday  with Stewart from Paying Ready Attention.

No this isn't a bird.  It's our neighbor's cat, Ghost.   Just what was the object of his deep, intense look.....

We of course did not let Ghost bother them and they went about feeding as if he weren't even there.

Also this week.... "Woody" as I've named him returned again.
Woody is a woodpecker that returns year after year to the same telephone pole next door to our house and spends hours pecking away on that pole.  I'm not sure what kind of a woodpecker he is or if it's even a "he" and this is about the best shot I got of him last night.

There is some red on it's head but it's not showing in this photo.

  1. Ghost looks pretty intent. The woodpecker could be a Hairy or a Downy woodpecker depending on its size.

  2. Your Woodpecker is a Downy and if it has red on it's head it is a male. They are the cutest of the woodpecker, at least of those that we get around here. Very funny that he is obsessed with the telephone pole. Your ducks would probably make hay of the neighbors cat if he tried catching them ... good that you stepped in. The kitty, of course, is just doing what comes naturally ... and he is a pretty boy too. Fun post, Ida ...

  3. Nice green on the mallards! The woodpecker looks like either a Downy or Hairy. They're similar, except the Hairy is a bit larger. Males have red, females do not.

  12. Beautiful green plumage on the duck's head. Wally could be a Downy or a Hairy.

  13. Two of my favourite sorts of birds - ducks and woodpeckers!

We have no woodpeckers inAustralia, so its nice to see some.

  15. Great photos! Just look how colorful those ducks are. Even their legs. We get both the small and large woodpeckers here. Mostly the small ones like this. The large ones with the crest come later in the season. They have a very distinct call and when you hear it you realize where Woody the Woodpecker got his laugh.

  16. The Mallards are making appearances everywhere this week. A pair showed up in our yard, too. I don't like to see cats on the loose in the neighborhood.

  17. That looks like a well fed cat. Two G
Mallards and one female somewhere is my guess. That's how it was in our old neighborhood anyway.
Depending on the size of the beak your Woody is either a Downy or a Hairy woodpecker.
