Wild Bird Wednesday and Wordless Wednesday.

Joining today for Wordless Wednesday with the photo below.  Although I have given it a title.

                                          Unidentified Flying Objects

Also joining Stewart (Paying Ready Attention) for Wild Bird Wednesday.

While out at Rooks Park last week we spotted the above birds, I have no idea what they are (can someone identify them please) but thought they looked really cool in that formation.  The bottom bird must have got it's signals wrong as it seems to be flying in a different formation.

We walked along another paved trail and in the underbrush we heard a noise and I stopped and spied this little guy:

I believe this is a Downey Woodpecker.  I was thrilled to get these shot of it and they all turned out pretty clear and decent.

A view of the back of it's head.

He'd moved to another branch and this was the last shot I got before he flew off.

It sure was fun to see him.

  3. Lovely shots, Ida. I've never seen a woodpecker like that before. I have no idea what your high-flying birds are. The poor chap at the end reminds me of myself in Irish dance class! All the best, Bonny

  4. Your photos are really beautiful, Ida!

Where I live, many birds can be seen now, migrating towards warmer countries. We also have a cute woodpecker that clearly enjoys the musical notes he creates hammering an old pine. Recently, I have tried to take photos of birds, but nothing worth showing yet...

    Have a lovely week!

  11. Great photos. I'm really fond of woodpeckers of all sorts, and rarely get to see them, so I enjoyed those, particularly.

The birds in flight? Not a clue what they are, but I love that you captured them in different phases of their wingbeats.

  18. Oh, how beautiful! I'm not sure what those birds are in the first photo. They look familiar. I showed my husband, too, and we both puzzled over them. We aren't bird experts by a long shot, though. We do see woodpeckers here. You always hear them before you see them.

  22. yes, that is a downy or hairy woodpecker, depending on its size. the flying ones look like the silhouette of a gull bird?

  23. Great shots of the birds, Ida! I love being able to capture a photo of them, especially the more unusual ones (as in not a crow!)

  24. I think that the mystery birds are wader of some sort - like a redshank or a yellow legs.

But thats a bit of an inspired guess.

  27. I agree that that last bird did not get the memo on how to "straighten up and fly right"!

Great shot of the woodpecker too.

Few people commented on my burnt orange post, but those who did liked it. Oh well...I like it.

  28. They did come out very well. I don't think I have seen a Downey Woodpecker before. Well maybe I have and just didn't know what I was looking at which is probably the case.

  31. I was going to guess perhaps Canadian Geese in the first pic - because this is when they start to migrate -- but it doesn't quite look their shape. the wings are different.

  36. These are great shots, Ida. Great looking woodpecker, if they would just stay in their trees and not our house :)

  37. Really great shots- I don't see the woodpeckers very often here..I think maybe one time..They were so far I didn't get a good shot.

  38. Brilliant pictures of the Woodpecker.

  39. oh Ida, you captured the male downy so well, your images are crisp and clear. That red spot on the back of his head, is sometimes shaped like a heart. That's a fun find and I always look for that!!

I skimmed thru the replies and it did not seem like anyone was able to I.d. the flight birds. I don't know either, I have never seen a bird that looks like that in flight.

Have a great weekend Ida, our weather has been beautiful!!
