While out at Rooks Park last week we spotted the above birds, I have no idea what they are (can someone identify them please) but thought they looked really cool in that formation. The bottom bird must have got it's signals wrong as it seems to be flying in a different formation.
We walked along another paved trail and in the underbrush we heard a noise and I stopped and spied this little guy:
I believe this is a Downey Woodpecker. I was thrilled to get these shot of it and they all turned out pretty clear and decent.
He'd moved to another branch and this was the last shot I got before he flew off.
It sure was fun to see him.

ReplyDeleteWhere I live, many birds can be seen now, migrating towards warmer countries. We also have a cute woodpecker that clearly enjoys the musical notes he creates hammering an old pine. Recently, I have tried to take photos of birds, but nothing worth showing yet...

ReplyDeleteOh, how beautiful! I'm not sure what those birds are in the first photo. They look familiar. I showed my husband, too, and we both puzzled over them. We aren't bird experts by a long shot, though. We do see woodpeckers here. You always hear them before you see them.

yes, that is a downy or hairy woodpecker, depending on its size. the flying ones look like the silhouette of a gull bird?

They did come out very well. I don't think I have seen a Downey Woodpecker before. Well maybe I have and just didn't know what I was looking at which is probably the case.

I was going to guess perhaps Canadian Geese in the first pic - because this is when they start to migrate -- but it doesn't quite look their shape. the wings are different.

ReplyDeleteoh Ida, you captured the male downy so well, your images are crisp and clear. That red spot on the back of his head, is sometimes shaped like a heart. That's a fun find and I always look for that!!
ReplyDeleteI skimmed thru the replies and it did not seem like anyone was able to I.d. the flight birds. I don't know either, I have never seen a bird that looks like that in flight.
