Good Fences #129 - Provenance Fences (Photo Heavy Post)

 Welcome!
It's been a bit of an emotional week here.  I've been struggling with trying to decide if I should put my sweet kitty, Snickers down.  Had made the decision to do it but then just couldn't so she's still with us for the time being. - It's a hard choice to make and I pray if you have pets you never have to make that decision.

Now let's move on to a happier subject.

It's time to join Theresa (The Run-a-round Ranch Report) for GOOD FENCES. - Warning that this is a photo heavy post as I couldn't decide which pictures to leave out.

Today's post is all about Provenance Fences.  So what is Provenance?

According to the Dictionary:

prov·e·nance
ˈprävənəns/
noun
the place of origin or earliest known history of something.
"an orange rug of Iranian provenance"
synonyms:origin, source, place of origin; More
  • the beginning of something's existence; something's origin.
"they try to understand the whole universe, its provenance and fate"
  • a record of ownership of a work of art or an antique, used as a guide to authenticity or quality.
    plural noun: provenances
"the manuscript has a distinguished provenance"
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While out for a drive one day we came upon a new housing division being built.  Here is the entrance to the division:

There are two or three of these bridge walls with cobblestone roads throughout the development.

Some of the pretty grasses growing along the roads.

None of this area has homes built in it yet but there are fences all around the plots of land. - I didn't take pictures of the area that had the homes in it. Just the undeveloped area.

In the background on the right side of the above photo you can see one of the homes in the area that has houses already built.

In the shot above you can see where they have plotted off a lot for a home in the background.  - It's all fenced off.  Behind it is a hillside with trees that is also undeveloped.

Took a couple of close-ups of the fencing.  You can see they have an electric fence at the top.  I'm not sure why though as there is nothing there for anyone to steal but maybe they just don't want people on the land.

This fence is rustic and you can see lots of these curvy boards like the one in the picture above throughout the fencing.

Another of the bridges in the area.  I like the cool trees that have the peeling bark on them.

Isn't that bark neat looking.  The wind was blowing as you can see in this photo.

Towards the back of the area we discovered that you can see a wine vineyard up on top of the hillside.

Here is a view further back and you can see the vineyard way up on top of the hillside.  Only the bridge areas have the cobblestone roads.

The log on this portion of the bridge/wall is going to need replacing soon.  Not sure what is going on with it but it's been damage somehow. (Hopefully not by vandals)

Finally a view of one of the farms that is in the division where people live.  There was a sign somewhere there that said to keep the gate closed as there were donkeys present.  We didn't see any donkeys but a couple of big woolly looking sheep wandered out of the barn so I snapped their picture.

It's my understanding that this is a very "Expensive" area to build a home at.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope the abundance of photos wasn't to overwhelming but I just couldn't leave any of them out.

Have a great day.

  1. Gorgeous scenes and fences today Ida!!!! I love the curves, the stone and the knotty, twisted wooden slats.

As for your kitty....I can so understand that!! One of ours [24 years in human years] long ago, died of heart failure in my arms. She was acting 'weird' and not able to stand and walk...I stayed up with her all night...sad sad times for us. I still relive that night often in my mind.

And the 'all black bird' on my post today isn't black at all...the lighting wasn't right. It's actually blue/purple rust and white belly....a tri-colored heron.

  2. Dear Ida - My heart is with you. That is the hardest choice we make in life. I know. I will never forget holding my dear kitty as she left. It hurt a LOT - but we owe them love and protection till the end. I pray you both will feel the comfort of the angels that are all around you. God Bless You my sister

  3. Hello Ida. So sorry that you are having a rough time deciding what's for the best for your beloved Snickers.
So glad you shared all those wonderful photos from your trip to Provenance - the stonework and fencing are just gorgeous!
I'm feeling a bit sad for the sheep and donkeys though - hope they aren't going to lose their nice pasture for fancy houses.

  4. Hello, what a great collection of fence shots. The sheep look chubby, almost like brown bears. So sorry about Snickers, I have been there with my family pets. It is hard thing to do. Happy Thursday, enjoy your day!

  5. I think the electric part it to keep the domesticated animals (horses and cows) away from the fence so they don't contemplate jumping over.

  6. I have had to make that decision about a pet a few times and it is devastating but at the same time comforting to know their struggles are over. My heart goes out to you, Ida.
You have given us a great assortment of fences to enjoy!

  8. Hello Ida!:) Love those substantial dry stone walls, and all the different styles of fences.

I'm so sorry about Snickers, and empathize with you about making such a painful decision, as I have also been where you are right now. It hurts so much.

  9. the area and entrance is really beautiful, i'm sure the homes will be as well!! all that stone work is brilliant, someone is very talented!!

making a decision for snickers will not be an easy one and i feel for you ida. you are such a cat lover but when the right time comes, you will make the right decision!!! sending you a big, warm, jersey shoe hug!!!

  10. that is a really odd looking fence, and I think I like it. usually electric means they are keeping something in side the fence. but don't think donkey or sheep would try to climb the fence. it is a beautiful area to build homes.
sorry about Snickers. we have had to make the decision 3 times in the past 32 years and it is horrible. but what I do is think about the pet not myself, I would not let a loved one suffer so I could hang on to him/her. prayers for your decision when you have to make it

  16. I am so very sorry to hear of your dear Snickers. We are having kitty issues here too, so I can doubly relate. I've had to make that decision twice now, and it doesn't get any easier.

Stunning photos Ida, that bridge wall is so beautiful. I hope you've enjoyed your summer, and are having a great fall.

  20. I'm so sorry about Snickers, that sure is a hard decision and it's always hard to loose a beloved pet.

I like your images of the fence - a great fence indeed. How odd though about the electric part, but what Wayne days makes a lot of sense. Thank you for this lovely tour.

  23. Ida, great fences! They all look like they were built to stand up to whatever!

  24. Lovely collection of fences in that development. We drove through Walla Walla twice recently -- somehow I think you live there or near there -- we were on our way to Idaho to celebrate a family birthday. It sure is growing.

Best wishes for your sweet kitty -- it is a hard decision, that sadly most people who have pets have to decide at some time.

  25. I too, just recently said good-bye to our dear dog, I have to keep the memories close, every single day. I really like this entry what style and grace, and great designs they made throughout.

  26. Great pictures of the fences though a bit strange to have all the land fenced with nothing there.
So sad having to decide about Snickers. You will know when it is time. It is one of the hardest things I've had to do.

  27. Odd name for a place. The fences are interesting though. Provenance is frequently used when describing artifacts. Archaeologists don't like casual diggers who sell items "robbed of their provenance."

  28. So sorry about Snickers. I had to make the decision for my pet dog years ago because it was sick and in pain. It was painful. Great fence shots.

  29. A very unique neighborhood! I really like the rustic fences and the cobblestone road. I thought it looked rather expensive.

  30. Very interesting fences - and I don't mind a lot of photos! So sorry about your kitty....I know exactly what you are going through. We had to put our dog down last May and it was such a difficult decision.

  34. Oh poor kitty. I hope all turns out well. That is a lovely property. Love the rustic fencing. And yes, it certainly does look expensive!

  35. Ida, I finally took the time to drop by and totally enjoy every photo I've been missing. You know how I love your fence photos and the scenery in your area. We've been pretty busy around here. Again, I'm so sorry about Snickers. I know how preoccupied you must have been with worry over her. That's so difficult and sad. Words can't express.

  36. that´s an interesting place for sure. Love the color of the fence and the gorgeous stoneworks :)
